Now that you have those ideas, what are you going to do with them? Who should you write for? Where will you sell them. Should you quit your job and devote full time to writing? These are only a few of the decision you’ll have to make as an author.
One of the first things you’ll have to decide is how to present your writing. Will it work better as fiction or non-fiction? Or perhaps somewhere in between with the now popular creative non-fiction? Do you plan to write novels or full-length books? Or short stories or articles? Maybe poetry is your forte. Or hard hitting news items or opinion pieces. Perhaps you prefer writing about science or math or for an academic audience. Maybe you’re a business person who needs to share her knowledge with budding entrepreneurs. It’s possible that your grandchildren have inspired you to write for children.
Each has its own rewards and challenges. And you’ll quickly learn that you’re much better at one or the other. Or maybe not so quickly.
At some point, you’ll probably decide to focus on one specific type of writing and build a following. In the beginning, however, it can be instructive to experiment with a number of forms and genres.
